Nose Thread Lift vs Surgical Rhinoplasty

Dr. Godley:

“The nose is one of the features people are hesitant to change. It sits at the centre of the face, and even small adjustments can change how the whole face looks. Because of that, many patients think carefully before committing to surgery.

Over the years, I have met patients who had rhinoplasty when they were younger and later regretted the decision. They tell me that they miss their old face

Non surgical techniques such as thread lifts have made it possible to achieve small refinements without permanently altering the underlying structure. Understanding the difference between a nose thread lift and surgical rhinoplasty can help you decide which approach aligns with your goals.”

What Is Surgical Rhinoplasty?

Surgical rhinoplasty is a procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to reshape the bone and cartilage of the nose. It can reduce size, refine the bridge, change the nasal tip, or correct structural concerns that affect breathing.

Because the underlying anatomy is permanently altered, rhinoplasty produces long lasting results.

However, surgery also involves:

• Operating room procedures
• Anesthesia
• Several weeks of recovery and swelling
• Irreversible structural changes

For patients seeking major changes to the size or structure of the nose, rhinoplasty remains the appropriate option.

What Is a Nose Thread Lift?

A nose thread lift is a non surgical procedure that uses dissolvable PDO threads placed beneath the skin to provide structural support.

Threads can be used to subtly lift the nasal tip or create a more defined bridge. As the threads dissolve over time, they also stimulate collagen production.

The procedure is performed in clinic using local anesthetic and typically takes less than an hour.

Unlike surgery, threads do not remove bone or cartilage. Instead, they work by providing temporary internal support while encouraging collagen formation around the threads.

Results typically last 12 to 18 months depending on the patient and technique used.

Nose Enhancements That Do Not Require Surgery

Many Godley Clinic patients who ask about their nose are not looking for dramatic change. Often the goal is a very specific refinement.

One patient came to Dr. Godley after breaking her nose multiple times over the years. The result was a profile that looked uneven and bumpy. She was not interested in rhinoplasty or the recovery that comes with surgery. Using threads to support the bridge created a more even profile without altering the overall character of her nose.

Another patient wanted to achieve a nose that she called “matangos”, meaning a taller and more defined bridge. Threads placed along the bridge created subtle lift and structure that helped her profile feel more balanced.

A third patient liked the overall shape of her nose but wanted a slight upward turn at the tip. Threads provided gentle support to lift the tip slightly, creating the softer profile she had been hoping for.

In each case, the change was small. But for the patient, it made a meaningful difference.

These are the types of refinements that are suited for a non surgical approach. They would not typically justify a trip to the operating room, yet they can still improve how a patient feels about their appearance.

How Dr. Godley Evaluates the Nose

The nose is not treated in isolation. Its relationship to the chin, lips, and forehead all affect how it is perceived.

During consultation, Dr. Godley evaluates:

• nasal structure and support
• skin thickness
• tip position
• overall facial balance

The goal of consultation is not to push one treatment over another, but to determine what approach realistically fits the patient’s anatomy and goals.

Nose Thread Lift FAQ

Is a nose thread lift permanent?

No. PDO threads dissolve over time, which means the changes are temporary. This is one of the reasons some patients prefer threads when they want a subtle refinement without making a permanent structural change.

Is a nose thread lift painful?

The procedure is performed with local anesthetic. Most patients describe pressure or mild discomfort during placement of the threads rather than pain.

How many threads are used in a nose thread lift?

The number of threads depends on the goal and the patient’s anatomy. In many cases, one to three threads are used to support the bridge or lift the nasal tip.

Is there downtime after a nose thread lift?

Most patients return to normal activities within a day or two. Mild swelling, tenderness, or small bruises may occur around the injection points.

Will the threads be visible or felt under the skin?

When placed properly, threads are not visible. Some patients may feel them briefly during the early healing period, but this usually settles as the tissue adapts.

Can threads be combined with other nose treatments?

In some cases, threads may be combined with small amounts of filler to refine the bridge or tip. The appropriate approach depends on the patient’s anatomy and goals. Read related article: Liquid Rhinoplasty or Nose Thread Lift?
