4 Ways to make your lip filler last longer

Heidi Kysa lip filler

Did you know there are actually ways to help your lip filler last longer?

I’m Heidi, and I’m a patient educator at Godley Clinic, an aesthetic practice in Vancouver run by Dr. Mark Godley.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned working in aesthetics is that maintaining your results is not just about the treatment itself. The little things you do at home can help support your lips between appointments too.

Here are four simple tips I share with our patients.

1. Keep Your Lips Moisturized

Okay, let’s start simple: lanolin.

Yes, technically it’s marketed for nipples, but it is incredibly moisturizing for dry lips too. Many people deal with dryness after filler, and keeping the lips moisturized can help them look smoother and healthier.

2. Exfoliate Your Lips

Speaking of dryness, gentle exfoliation helps too.

Making a lip scrub is actually pretty easy. Many people use a simple sugar scrub a couple times a week to help remove flaky skin and smooth the surface of the lips. The key is keeping it gentle and not overdoing it.

3. Stay Hydrated

Lip filler is made with hyaluronic acid, which holds onto water.

So yes, drinking water and keeping yourself hydrated can help your lips look smoother and feel better after filler. Honestly, keeping a giant water bottle with me everywhere is one of my favorite lip filler tips.

4. Choose a Licensed and Responsible Practitioner

And obviously, make sure you are going to a licensed and responsible practitioner.

Dr. Godley is also really particular about the products he uses for lips. One product often used at Godley Clinic is Restylane Kysse, which is designed for softness and natural movement. Not all fillers are created equal, so make sure to ask what product is being used and whether it is Health Canada approved.

5. Habits That May Break Down Filler Faster

And bonus content: what not to do.

Right after filler, try not to constantly touch, press, bite, or overly pucker your lips while everything is settling. That also means avoiding things like straws or kissing for the first couple of days.

Freshly injected lips are more delicate for a bit. Even constantly checking them, rubbing them together, or massaging them because they “feel weird” can irritate the area while the filler is settling. So… hands off for a couple of days.
